Lord Willing

by: Hannah Dearth

For as long as I can remember, my mom and grandma have followed up making plans or talking about the future with the phrase “Lord willing.” I’ve frankly just always listened to it without any deeper thought into the meaning.

Lately, I’ve really gotten myself thinking about the power behind these two words. “Lord willing” doesn’t just mean “if it is meant to be, it will be.” It isn’t just a sit back and see what happens line that is thrown out there in conversation.

No, “Lord willing” means that I am moving and working as someone who faithful and obedient, but I am listening to His guidance and His bigger plan that He has for my life. It is so much more than a “maybe” or a “hopefully” or a thing we say just because.

It is complete surrender. Much like Jesus, before knowingly facing his brutal death crying out to God please, if there is another way, do it. Then, following up with an ultimately, “your will be done.”

How different would our lives look if we didn’t always push and force what we wanted in situations both big and small, but followed up with a prayer and intent that “No matter what happens God, I trust you?”

After all, God’s plan is always so much bigger than anything we could ever wish for. So, I’m praying more for His plan and less for my power. More for His guidance and less for my control. Even when it hurts, even when it doesn’t make sense in this moment.

That is my prayer for all of us. That in doing this, it feels more like a blessing, and less like a burden. That in the midst of doing this, we get to experience the full, whole, unconditional love and grace and mercy He intends for us, and then,Lord willing, get the chance to pass it down to our future generations as well.
